First Rigging Attempt

So this is my first rigging attempt, I am in charge of rigging for a 3d production class, but no one in the class knew how. I opted to learn, and then we ended up with this as one of our characters.

My questions/issues:

This rig is in several pieces, and is made of metal and is very mechanic. Is this easier to parent most pieces, then smooth bind and paint the rest? I'm trying this, but I'm not sure how best to approach places such as the arms, to make sure they still move as if they are made of metal pieces, but don't look disjointed.

This is my first rig/skin task, and it has been troubling me a ton.

If it should look and behave like metal components there is no need really to smooth bind the pieces. Ofcourse I don't know the exact needs for the rig. You can always parent some elements and smooth bind other parts that have to be less rigid.
