Getting rigging information from film footage?

I am shooting a short film in a green screen studio; a fantasy story on magic.

I want to be able to reconstruct an actor's skeletal movement information from shot footage. For the purposes of overlaying with a virtual proxy actor that matches the original actors movements; to allow for recasting shadows on the ground and for re-lighting. Note that it doesn't have to be particularly accurate.

Is there a tool that I can use to do this? I assume that there will be manual intervention but of course the more automatic, the quicker things can be done.

Thanks for any help,

You could use Syntheyes to track points on the body, import the info into Maya, then constrain your proxy to the locators you get. The more tracker data you can get the better.

There are also some experimental ways with the Kinect or PS Eye with some third party apps(I forget the names sorry!).

I much prefer the Syntheyes way though, comes out a lot cleaner imo. You can actually build a rig system much like how mocap is implimented into rigs this way. I may be able to provide an example of what I am talking about if it is unclear, since I used this method at the last studio I worked a couple times.

Hope that helps!

Thanks Rick for pointing me to Syntheyes. I think I can use this for other applications as well.

I do own a Kinect too. I saw that Syntheyes can even do facial capture, that is brilliant. I actually need to do this as well for sequences involving a troll like creature.

The studio I am using does have camera motion tracking, so that part is good. You can see more info about a test shoot here.

But definitely if you have more about your example, that be great.
