Learning to animate models

Hi, as you can see, I'm new here, so I don't know exactly if I can ask this here (I guees yes)
I'm also new at modeling with 3ds max Autodesk, but I'm getting use to it, more or less.

But something that I can't learn by myself is the skin of a model, envelopes, weights and so on.
That's the center of my problem, I have the model, I have the animation, I can insert the bones as well, but, when I give animation to those bones... well a disaster...

Anybody can explain me how do this more or less ok? No need to be very proffesional, just need to have the main idea.

Well then, thanks for reading.
Regards~
