Week 1 is complete.

A few teammates did not post any files. As a reminder this is a participatory process. If you can't post files you won't be able to stay on the team. We'll have a one-week grace period on that policy...but be mindful if you want to continue with the expedition.

Week 2 Unity Learning Expedition:

The theme this week is Materials and Lighting.

-You should learn the various material maps:
Albedo, Metallic, Normal Map, Height Map, Occlusion, Detail Mask, and Emission

-Know how to tile, and offset...and add textures to your materials

-See where you can change the rendering mode to 'Transparent' to create glass, water, bubbles, etc.

-Know how to create lights (should be easy/familiar coming from c4d)

-Know the basics of Lighting:Settings under the Window Menu

-Learn how to mark non-animated objects as 'Static' and how that's critical for Unity to make things sexy

-Learn how to add light probes and reflection probes to get beautiful results with moving meshes

-Understand how to enjoy Unity's automatic light/GI baking

SUGGESTED VIDEOS TO COME

IF YOU ARE AMBITIOUS
-Explore the new 'Progressive Light-mapper' as an alternative to the default/older "Enlighten" mode
-Learn how to add a Secondary Map in materials
-Learn material "Advanced" options
-See if you can get materials working from c4d import
-See if you can get Substances working...and perhaps integrate full substance pipeline from c4d

Will upload mine today.

Amending my first statement. It's midnight, just wrapping up my 60 hours for this week.

I'll have to drop out.

I'm using the Dark Theme in my free edition now thanks to Sam...a lot easier on these old peepers!

And now w/any tutorials or screen grabs you'll appear as if you are a Unity pro user with the upgraded interface. :-)

Personal goal: by the end of tomorrow night I want to work up an interactive 'material museum'. Add in nice lighting. I do best when I put myself out there w/a declared goal.

Below are some reference images for inspiration. My piece will be simpler and much less refined, but this gives me ideas.

Will try to get something uploaded this weekend. Had one day to install Unity and watch a few videos before losing power/internet for two days due to snowstorm. Working through the Lynda ET course at the moment.

Two recommended tools for Unity work...both *free*

Autodesk FBX Review - it's a lightweight standalone viewer app

Baking in Unity couldn't be easier. But it could certainly be faster. I'm surprised w/how long it takes and I discovered it uses CPU--not the much faster GPU to do its baking.

At least you can continue working while it bakes.

Baking time will delay my posting of material museum until Monday night. Now I know to anticipate a factor I hadn't before,

Material Exhibit Scene Layout, without roof.

As I was working on this I got a bit inspired by Westworld's 'Maze' concept. Here is the structural layout in c4d. Scale = human figure in the fg.

One can use octane to bake lighting in Unity. Previously I didn't see the point, but after this project...the merit of that is clear.

Materials and lighting are not my strong point.

A couple of quick questions:
- Is tiling the material only possible on the material, and not on the object like in C4D?
- Do all imported objects need to have an UV, or are there projection possibilities?

Here's as best I understand:
-I haven't seen any way to select particular projections (e.g. frontal, cubic, etc) in Unity. But clearly Unity handles its own plane, cube, sphere, capsule objects so that must be done under the hood.
-Imported objects need UV's but c4d will automatically convert the projections of primitives to properUvs during FBX export
-If you try to manipulate texture settings in c4d (scale/rotate/tile) those settings don't translate to Unity. So that tweaking is best done in Unity
-Tiling in Unity is done per object. So the mapping of the material is done by selecting an object in hierarchy...going to it's material component in the inspector and manipulating it there.

The video was helpful, though it seems he didn't understand everything that he was doing.

This is what I got from it: (I'm on C4D.R17 so thing might have changed):
- Unity only works with UV's. There's no projection options in Unity like in C4D.
- Other projection ways in C4D are converted to UV's when imported . A spherical mapping on a cube with only 6 polygons will get weird results. If you subdivide the cube, the results will get better, though never exactly the same as in C4D.
- Parametric objects will use their generated UV's from C4D
- In Unity, tiling is done on the material. If you have the same material applied to more objects, tiling will be applied to all objects. If you want different tiling you have to make a new material. Like you said, you can edit the material in the inspector when you select an object. However, this will edit the material itself.
- Unity seems to import some of the texture tag offset/tiling options from C4D. However Unity applies those to the material, so if you use the material on more objects, only one of the settings will be similar to the C4D file.
- Texture maps from the color and the normal channels are imported. (to Albedo and Normal). Other maps seem to be ignored.
