Basic Question: How to wrap a Spline around an Object?

The question of the title says it all. I see a lot pictures/cgi with buildings and they'll have those cool diagrams/curvy designs to make the buildings look ancient or beautiful, and Im just wondering how I can get the spline to wrap around a cylinder or a cube or a sphere etc. Thanks in advance

The general way to do that is to subdivide your spline so you have plenty of points, scale and position it so it surrounds your object, and then run the Mesh>Spline>Project command in spherical mode.

You can also select edge loops on your polygonal object and run the edge-to-spline command.
