difference between spline and clone object

hi, as the title says, im very curious about finding the difference between:

*cast box and spline*

Workflow A. choose the box, put a cloner on it, select mode/object, use the spline as the object.

Worflow B. choose the box, put a cloner on it, select mograph/effector/spline, use the spline as the spline.

I know, its a silly question, but its driving me crazy :P

With the cloner you create clones on a spline. With the effector you distribute already existing clones along a spline.

A lot of settings are the same, but the cloner enables you to animate the cloner-count and the effecter enables you to use falloffs or strenght sliders.

A very important distinction, is that the spline effector as offset position control. So, you can animated your clones along the spline. You can't do so when just using the Object Cloner. With that, you can only align to certain set parameters.

The Cloner has an offset value too, but it will animate rotation as well as position (and even scale).

Honestly the differences are more to do with workflow, there's no right or wrong way to go about things in Cinema 4D, just different approaches with different benefits. For a simpelr scene you'd probably just clone on the spline directly, but if you wanted to animate the objects onto the spline from another starting point then you might prefer to use the effector, especially as it has the falloff system built in. The cloner also offers things like a volume spread between the spline and it's rail spline, procedural animation with the rate and variation controls.

So really it's up to you, the effector just decouples the controls into a separate object that you could then apply to multiple cloners/matrix objects and so on or make use of it's own position for animation controls.
