Seemingly simple but perplexing question about joint hierarchy

I created a pretty simple insect-like creature, with several joints going down its back. I did it by hand, not with the character object since it is so simple.

While the character's joints are moving, however, I want to move the whole thing through the air with a vibrate tag. More like animate it in the air. So basically, while its joints are doing their thing, the whole joint hierarchy will be animated to make it look like it is floating around.

I thought that by just parenting the joint hierarchy to a null, I could add the vibrate tag to the null, but the null just moves the topmost joint in the hierarchy, not the entire hierarchy. And nesting that null inside another null doesn't help.

Does anyone know how I can animate the position of an entire joint hierarchy?

It seems like it is CMotion that is causing the joints not to move. The object has CMotion applied.

I came up with one workaround which works.

Attach the CMotion to a spline and then animate the spline.
