urgent basic knife tool question

I'm trying to make a cut from point to point on a long model, I need to zoom in to snap to the first point, and then scroll the view down to snap to the second point. How do I keep the knife tool active while scrolling? I had it working a minute ago and don't know what I did, and now I can't seem to do it again!

The tool should stay active. Are you using the scroll wheel to zoom?

I found I had to put the cursor exactly over the point and then click, then the tool would remain active. Even though snapping was on, and the tool had snapped to the first point, if the cursor was even a little way away, the tool stopped being active. Anyway, got the job done! Thanks for replying.
