Why doesn't scaling a null work like position/rotation?

Somehow this has always eluded me in c4d. A simple problem:

If I have two objects that are 100% in scale size and drop one into a null - then scale that NULL to 50% -

Shouldn't I be able to drop the second object in that null, hit PSR reset and have it scale down to 50%?

Isn't it the null I'm scaling and not the object? So, in my mind everything inside it should scale down if I reset the scale. Always confused me as it does work that way with Position and Rotation - just not Scale?

Ultimately I work a lot where I an rotating, positioning AND scaling objects via a master null - then want to drop stuff into that null and have 'em line up rotationally, positionally AND scale...lly... I can do all but the scale part - sup sup???

Any way of achieving this?

TIA,

Are you scaling with the model tool or the object tool? (hold down your mouse on the top icon on the left toolbar)

Ha - I've never used object mode to scale a null before - but it works! Thanks! Figured it was something simple like that. :-)

When you scale with the model tool, the 'scale' of the object stays the same and it just shrinks the model, ie all the points and polys contract around the axis. The object tool is pretty much 99% used for scaling objects in animation, try to avoid using it for scaling objects whilst modelling otherwise it introduces all sorts of whacky scale values into the object which will make texturing, materials and modelling harder to do.
