keeping the scale of an xref object when changed

I'll try to explain as best I can. I create a red cube and a blue cube the exact same dimensions. I bring one of them into a document using xref, say the red cube, and I scale it up. I then decide I want to change it and replace it with the blue cube. When I change the file in xref it reverts back to it's original shape. Ive got round this by creating everything in my scene to relevant scales of each other and then bringing them in to a master file but I thought there must be some way that allows you a bit more freedom.

Make sure you scale using the Object mode, not the Model mode, then it works fine.
