Help wih texturing modifiers

I am getting the hang of texturing general objects but still pretty stuck on objects that have been modified with mographs. The last thing i tried i had a text plain that i have extruded with the extrude mograph so i can animate it. The problem i am having is that i can only modify the whole object and not different parts of it as in reality i am only texturing the plane and not the added surfaces that the modifier has created. Is there a tutorial around that helps with this as i cant find any.

Thanks for any help given
