Mixing Velocity and Collision triggers

For dynamics in r12.

Let's say that I have a group of meshes, forming an aircraft, and I want to animate using dynamics using peak velocity to being with, but as the airplane collides with the ground and bounces about, I want collision triggers to activate, and have pieces break off become rubble, independent of the velocity animation.

What's the best way to go about this? Do I need to bake the velocity animation into keyframes before setting up the collision trigger?
