That looks as much like the Mac mini as the HP Z1 looks like an iMac. Nice to see Apple inspire such innovation. Although the the Mini/iMac aren't at all intended for this user target segment.

For a linux/windows equivalent, the shuttle DS61 also has about the same form factor as the mac mini (it's actually smaller but carries external power) and can use more memory and faster processors at competitive price . It's not fanless though (so I'm not sure about stacking them).

For rendering, if your talking bang-for-your-buck you need one of the 6 core i7 . The percentage gain is higher then the additional percentage of cost.

I'm a Mac guy. My price target for a personal baby renderfarm is around $5000. I have looked very hard at the MacMini and slim PC iClones. But they are all based on the i7 4 core and compatible chipset. They are just too expensive when you divide the price per core.

I can't speak for all Mac users, but I don't ever remember the Mac platform ever being 'bang for buck'.

Though a far as managing a network and C4d renderfarm goes, OSX makes it possible for an idiot like me to get things done.

A few years ago you could buy MacBook Pros with exploding batteries.
These provided pretty good bang for buck!
