basic animation pain

I am trying to select a range of frames that affect certain animated objects in the dope sheet window, then change the overall speed of those animations.

I select the frames I want, and an orange bar appears above the timeline. I drag one end of this to adjust the overall length of that animation, but it also changes other frames of animation for objects that I haven't selected.

How do I only affect the objects/frames I want to and leave the others alone?

I'm not thinking right, the frames affect a whole group, so I stretch them, then have to go back and 'unstretch' the component bits I don't want changed.

Haven't done animation in ages, and it's frying my brain!

Couple of options (at least, I'm sure there are more ways to skin this particular cat) -

1. Select only the tracks you want (more fiddly, but in the end more precise)

2. Drag each object from the object manager to the timeline so that only the objects you need to animate are shown in the timeline, then proceed as before
