Select Parent Objects ( viewport )

When I select a group on the stage, is there a code that will enable it to be selected as a whole?

I found one but it is not what I want.
As in max, the only one select object.

Thanks.

You don't use the proper names for things but I think I know what you mean.
When you make a group, you want to click on any part of it in the viewport and select the whole group ?
You can't do it in Cinema 4D.
In Cinema 4D, a group is simply a null that is a parent of other objects. It has no other properties, such as selecting everything when you click it in the viewport.
The idea of a group as it exists in Max or Maya isn't really in Cinema. There are a few workarounds but nothing really similar.

One workaround is to use a 'Connect' object as parent, instead of a 'Null' object.
Then, in the 'Connect' object's 'object' tab, uncheck 'weld'.
This should do what you want but I haven't tested it in a complex scene, it may suffer a performance penalty.

Cineversity's CV-Object Manager has a Select Parent command (along with a bunch of other useful things).
Might be useful...

It is useful for what it is, but from what I know of 3DS Max especially, the way groups work in that program, is that once you make a group, it selects as a single object in the viewport.
Select parent isn't going to emulate that, especially when you consider that a group might contain multiple levels of nested objects, so that after selecting an object in viewport, select parent  may not even get you to the top object of the group. What if you click on something 3 levels deep in that hierarchy ?

Keep clicking Select Parent until you run out of parents.

Thank you all.
I think this is a big problem.
Consider what you want to organize a whole house.
It's a problem that consumes all the energy of a person.
Maxon is a really strange company.
Even the viewport quality is still far behind.
What is the problem with these guys?

thanks again

Why is it a problem? What exactly are you even trying to do, in context? (I can easily organize a house in the OM, with layers and hierarchies.)
Applying workflows from other 3D applications is never a good idea, as the behavior of the tools is different in detail.
Pay more attention to the object manager, it is far more important than in other tools. I rarely select directly in the viewport, since it doesn't reflect the hierarchy and organization of the scene but only spatial relationship.

Are you kidding me
Have you ever organized your own house?
Do you carry the chair and the feet separately or as a whole?
My friend, I think you have not noticed the weight of the event.

It would be a lot of fun to choose all the items in the scene, choose and act with one click.

Otherwise;

vierwport select, go object manager.
vierwport select, go object manager.
vierwport select, go object manager.
vierwport select, go object manager.
vierwport select, go object manager.
vierwport select, go object manager.
vierwport select, go object manager.
vierwport select, go object manager.
OMG. You must be crazy.

You can add a tag "over ride child selection".
Unfortunately, the website www.mediaboxstudios.com is down…

Thank you.
If it has been uploaded before, it would be very good if you share it.

@superberdus

While I too share the sentiment that a lot of the things could be improved I also can say that in 3ds Max I find it clunky to organize a scene compared to what I can do in C4D. The outliner is good but can be slow and weird to navigate especially if you come from C4D where hiearchies play an important role.

I suppose that can attest to the fact that you need to understand and work with your DCC app and not impose other apps and their rules into it. The most fun I have had (and progress too) when working with different software is when I accepted it for what it is and tried to understand how it works - not the other way around.

That said I do think there are many many areas for C4D to improve. Funnily enough I can say the same thing for 3ds Max.

@nejck

I have been using c4d for 10 years.
C4D is a great program, no doubt about it.

I believed in maxon. I thought they would improve the program very well. But it does not.
I still use UVlayout. WHY MAXON, WHY?
There are so simple problems.
But it seems simple, but very serious energy-consuming problems.
Maxon does not know what he's doing.
All of the administrators must be fired for good.

The question is:
who do you think it addresses?
What is your purpose?
What are you doing with the developers?
No money?

Problematic firms are always behind.
Belkide In their internal affairs, they have to make a revolution.

These are my thoughts. I'm exhausted.
