material override in viewport?

is it possible to do material override in the viewport? Hopefully without the need to group everything under a common null?

Just to be clear - say you have a model of a car with all sorts of paramntric and bitmap shaders but want to see it in the viewport using a realtime shaders like the HB realtime shaders - but not needing to remove all the materials on all the objects

...simply enable Material Override option in Render Settings. And for Custom material paste some of HB shaders. This is native solution.
Another options are plugins, there are few around, personally still using AoB Overlay plugin created by Andre Ignier

material override is only for render time - not viewport

the overlay plugin you suggested is a start - thanks

You could put a shader/texture in an unwanted and unchecked channel, say Diffuse, then only display that channel in the editor.

I use this method a lot when applying bump maps. It means you don;t have to go through the hassle of the old hack of
putting your bump texture in the colour or luminance channel to see your bump map.

My HB_OverwriteMaterial does exactly that and more.

haha....thanks. well there is a lot it cant. btw. HB_OverwriteMaterial considers your selections. Eg. if you have selected a material this will be used. If you dont have a material selected it will use my Modo Material. Same for Objects. It will only apply the Overwrite material to the selected objects. If you have no Object selected it will apply the Overwrite Material to all Objects. With Alt-Click You reset to your Old Materials.
