keep sculpting from rounding edges

I have a design with a series of segmented rectangles. I am stamping bas relief designs on top of them with the sculpting tools. I've got everything working except when I sub-divide, it softens all the hard edges and creates gaps that are not what i want. In Sculpting Subdivide Options, there is a softness setting, but that's not doing what I want either. Reducing softness creates a lot of weird surface artifacts. Anyone have experience with keeping closer to your original shape when you subdivide? Thanks -

Instead of just clicking "subdivide", in the sculpt pallet, click the little settings icon next to it. Then adjust the smoothing. 0 = bilinear subdivision that keeps the model looking the same. 100 = catmul rounding like subdivision nurbs

Hope that helps!

Also, you should try to work with quads only where possible. Looking at the pinching in your subdivided version, it looks like there may be tris, non planar quads or overlapping areas.

iB - thanks for your help. Yeah wish it was cleaner, hard to avoid the tris.

Not so hard, you have to think strategically.

Agreed, it's more of a time issue. There are 66 pieces with no straight edges that have to get done on a budget and schedule so drawing them carefully by hand to optimize quads wasn't an option.
