Map Baking Madness - Need advice from pro
Sorry for the long preamble but here's my story in a nutshell...
I've been trying to bake out the normal and displacement maps for some (more complicated) models that have been retopo-ed for the past few days.
I've watched literally about 17 hours of tutorials etc... Tried 3d Coat, Topogun and XNormal.
Tried cage, no cage, custom cage and just about anything I came across.
Closest I got were some decent results that I had to take into Photoshop to clean up.
What's giving me most problems is normal and displacement. There are always artifacts... sometimes very few, but I've never had a map be artifact free.
Question for those with production experience:
Is it normal to have to retouch maps in Photoshop or should I be able to bake them out without the need for retouching? For the life of me I cannot do that.
So I'd like to know how the pro's do it... Do you concentrate on getting the perfect bake... Or is the "perfect bake" (especially on a more complicated piece of geometry) a rare thing and you usually have to do cleanup?
Thank you -
PS: This would help me tremendously to know where to focus and what is wrong.
