How to paint out lighting information?

Hi everyone!

I want to create good albedo/diffuse textures from photographs which contain a fair amount of lighting information. Can you guys link me to training videos or tutorials (no matter if commercial or free) which show how to go about painting out all the lighting and shadow information from a photographic texture?

Or are there any tools which automate this process?

Thank you very much! :-)

Lightbrush software does this, otherwise you have to use the select color range in photoshop to polarise the shadows and highlights.

Lightbrush sounds exactely like what I need. Never heard of it before. Thanks for the tipp!

Can you maybe elaborate a little on the other half of your answer? What do you mean with "polarise the shadows and highlights"? And how should I use the select color range tool? For isolating the shadow and highlight areas?

Yeah, you figured it out. Once those areas are selected, you just color correct them so that there is as little contrast as possible. So lighten shadoows and darken highlights. 8 bit images like Jpeg will quickly reveal artifacts....so use 16bit or Raw format.
