3D max UV is a little mess?

I'm very new on 3D modeling and 3D Max Studio, so when first time I've faced UV, materials and UV unwrapping I got a little confused and now I'm trying to get the best way to handle and improve it.

One of my questions is about if it possible to apply UV directly on your object surface when I finish an object, so I select some areas of it and apply the UV, making the modeler generate automatically UV map from selected area without I have to go to UV Editor and choose UV unwrapping, isolate my parts and choose the method of UV (box, planar, cylinder and so on).

Is there some tool that makes UV mapping easier to work with? I'm not sure but nDo or dDo accomplish it? Sorry if I say something wrong cause' I'm pretty new on these stuffs.

Thanks for patience and regards!
