Creation of elevation heightmaps (terrain)

I'm looking for some software (or Maya script/plugin) for creating heightmaps of elevated terrain (big scale - like mountain ranges and such). I want it to either be fully-automated, or semi-automated.

I know that I can just paint it manually in Photoshop, or sculpt some terrain, but I'm not interested in that at this point: I want speed and randomization.

I want to use the finished results with a script/plugin called iDisplace which is a heightmap-based displacement deformer for Maya: http://www.creativecrash.com/maya/d...cement-deformer (some really interesting stuff indeed)

You could just use Maya, and/or the script you just posted? Heightmaps and displacement maps are all easy in Maya! Go to your Visor to look up examples, if you haven't already.

That's not what I'm asking about - I already have the Maya-parts covered.
What I asked about was about a terrain generator that can create heightmaps.

Anyway, I did find one called GeoControl 2 which is very good and easy to use. In fact it's above all my expectations.
