Thank you for comments.

I made a blog here for the more technical aspects of this movie project and for my custom shaders and tools like

3d motion blur

Awsome work. Love the details you put in the environment. Maybe the characters could use more detail.

For the characters I have a completely new solution. I hope to finish and post it soon.

Only just seen all this, looking really good, the light effects from cryengine look incredible!.. look forward to seeing the characters, this environment deserves some!

I'm going to be starting to learn Cryengine 2 on the weekend, just curious which version of Max you have as it's not compatible with all of them. Also, if you have any advice for a beginner then I'd love to know!.. workflow tips etc?

Thank you for comments.

Versions of Max compatible : from Max 8 to 2009.
I'm trying to keep it all in max 9, but it's not always possible.

Advices ? Hmmm ... When in trouble, or when something is not working how is supposed to, always simplify. It's hard to troubleshot a very complex object, or in a very complex scene with thousands of objects.
SO make yourself a very simple level - call it "test level" - with only a plane and a few objects (I also have a small house in my test level).
When you are trying something and it doesn't work, try it with a box.
I also made a box in 3ds max with 1 meter side and I exported for cryengine Sandbox. It serves as a test box (companion cube ? ) and as measurement.

But you can also measure with solids.

Thanks for the tips, but don't think my scenes will be too complex anytime soon!.. still very useful to know... the first problem with Cryengine seems to be getting it to work with Max, I have crysis but only have max which it is apparently not compatible with, I now need Crysis Wars to use Max 2009, seems quite ridiculous how difficult it's been made to actually get using the program!.. until I sort that out I think I'll try out Unreal

This is some truly impressive work, Sebastian. Good luck with the production.

I would like to make a suggestion on your website though. Please add an RSS feed so it is easier to be notified when you update the page. A blog of your progress, or simply of notices when something is updated or new images are released, would help people to keep track of your project as well.

Looking forward to future updates.

(apologies for the slight necro-posting)

Necro posting ? What ? No nno no DOn't say that here . That would mean this project is abandoned, but in spite of very slow update, this project is very much alive.
I am building more stones now And high quality earth/dirt

I have an RSS thing on my website. I'm not sure how or if works because I never used RSS, but it's there and since it's ready made by blogspot I think it should work well.

And I'm not sure what happened, last time I checked here, I think a week ago I had maybe 7.000 of 10.000 views on my thread - gathered in 2 years I think ? And last night there were 77.000 MDuffy what did you do ? That's like ... wow !

EDIT : here is a low res video test. I was just checking the water stream, the water splash, the water reflection, transparency . Everything else doesn't matter (not finished) in this shot, only the water.

No, I didn't think the project was dead at all, and I guess 4 months between replies isn't tooooo bad in a WIP thread. :-)

Actually, I didn't find this thread through my normal browsing of CGTalk (I only check WIP forums occasionally), but rather came here via a link on So I'm betting a lot of your recent thread views are coming from there. Hello, fellow Redditors! (

I've added your RSS feed to my reader, so I'll be alerted whenever you make updates. Thanks!

Cheers, and good luck!

No I don't have a higher version. A higher version would disappoint because there weren't enough details for a higher res, at the time I rendered this test.

But since you said it looks good, I will upload a short flyby in high res after I finish this sequence.
I kinda felt bad for this spot with the water, because in the final film you only see this for half a second, so perhaps I will upload later a movie with the environment sets only.
