Katana

Software: Maya 2014

Hi all,

I am in the process of creating a matchmove project. I am modeling and texturing a Katana then want to place into real life footage.

Here is my progress so far. I would like to hear any advise and critique on what I have done so far.


Please note I have not added in any lights yet.

The only thing I see is your wood texture is too dark to see details or highlights.

You also need to learn more about lighting. The lightsetup for now is pretty boring to me. no soft shadows. Maybe create a backdrop with a curve in it. The light will flow instead of stopping when hit the walls.

And it's not a katana, it's a wakizashi. Basicly, the katana have more blade and a bit of more in the tsuka

I can already see improvement in modeling compare to your plane.

As mentioned already, the wood is too dark to see the details. Also I think you need to use a bigger map size for the bump/normal map, on the cabinet & blade, as its rather burry.

Consider also in the use of spec and reflect maps, that there should be more shine/reflection on the sharpened surface of the Wakizashi (learned this word today) blade.

Thanks for the reply. I agree that the texture is a bit dark. I have not added in any lights yet only worried about the modeling and texturing at the moment. I should add in some lights soon though.

O I never knew there was a different name haha, Wakizashi.

Hey PKD,

How you doing, hope you are well.

Every time I work on something new my modeling only gets better, that's what I enjoy about this thank you for noticing . Yea one learns something new everyday lol (Wakizashi). Thanks for the tips will give it ago!

Hello, i think you've got to set up some lights indeed, that would make the texture of it all and
especially the wood wich is to dark as has been commented by Scote

Samourai got two swords on each side. The katana (main weapon) and the wakizashi.

Do you plan of redoing your blade to fit the katana specificity?

yip will put in some lights.

Scote, No I will keep with the wakizashi, it is the sword I wanted to do, but I just did not know what the name for it was just assumed it was a katana as well.

Just an update. I added in some lights (3 point lighting system using area lights and linear workflow) and made the wood not as dark.



I wont spend to much time on the lights right now as this piece will be used in a match move project and only then I will match up the light to the footage.

The bump are too strong in general, & the edges of the wood are too sharp, like the stand.

You can round/chamfer the edges, or use some edge smoothing shaders.

everything about the Sword is good, except the blade. It looks like aluminum wrapping used for for baking potatoes or something. It need to look sharp. Bump is too strong, & blade lack sharpness

Fix this, & I think you can get a good professional render.

You may want to consider the background also. Why not at least simple table & a back wall?

Wow thanks PKD, now that you mentioned it to me I can see what you mean. The reason I have no BG in yet is because I want to use this in a matchmove project.
