WIP: Dwarf House from Snow White

I need help figuring out the best way to create the hay on the roof. Attached is the model using alphas and normals for the hay, the second was a grass test and also the original image I am working from.

Also, why is the background rendering black in some areas on the first render? I think it may be clipping but when I adjust the clipping distance it does nothing to help.

Please keep in mind that the surrounding trees, and grass are placeholders. I think I need to make the shadows softer too. The textures are also incomplete

I think your first try with the hay on the left roof in the picture with only the house isn't a bad start at all. Right now it's a bit scrubby for my taste. If you you used some kind of hair simulation here, you might comb those frizzles out or simply cut of some of those stray straws

About those black areas: At first sight, before reading, I thought those to simply be the background peaking through between the trees.

In both cases you could help us others out here a bit by telling us, which techniques you used.

All in all I think you are in for a very good start here. You hit the colors and forms of the original spot on almost everywhere. Only thing that disturbed my eye a little bit is the fence to the right of the door. The vertical pickets are quite slim compared to the original and thus don't fit the overall appearance of the house as a home of smaller bearded workers.

Have fun going on with this one
