above the earth

Hi, I'm starting a personel project in the space on maya and mental ray and I just want to share my work in progress these days.

This photo is my reference


I began the cloud.


I follow this tuto ( http://mayazest.blogspot.fr/2011/11...ouds-using.html ) and I have some problem to make the dissipation, to control the area cloudy and not cloudy.


If you have any advices for me, it helps me a lot.

I need to find the good scale for the texture and the cloud, I don't know if the solution is the focal length or the sizing for texture and clouds ( or both ).

i add the clouds, make some glows test


I still work on it, try to make shadow pass for clouds, I think maybe I could start something more SF like the idea from the videogame destiny with something big standing above the earth.

Very cool! I really like how the clouds are coming along.

Is this like a Bespin/cloud city?

yes, it is kind of cloud city, I have been more influenced by the traveller from bungie's game : Destiny.

I'm trying to make some sketches on this because I don't like this design.

I 've got some inspirations from the site conceptships.blogspot.fr

here is my lastest shot :


I think it works better with ships than cities, for the scale of this scene and the point of view.
The design for the ship is simple, i just want to focused on textures, clouds and lights in space.

Tell me guys what you think ? what can I improve this pic ?

Nice work, but you atmosphere look sorta like water, try to make it less glossy.

thanks, i agree with you, in fact the atmosphere was just plane with a mia shader with no reflection, just a ramp linked with opacity.

I work with fluid to give a better appearance for atmosphere
here is the "pass fluid"



It's almost done, maybe the glow in background have to be smoother in my opinion...
