Chinese Actor Caricature

I offered to help my friend design a t-shirt for a movie here in China. What started out with a simple 2D sketch turned into a 3D character... and then turned into a 3D caricature of the actor. I had some pretty shoddy reference pics, but I went for it anyways. Here's the first head I did (also my first 3D head ever):

I added the goofy eyebrows and beard in just to see what it would look like. This was ok.. but decidedly not interesting enough. This guy really needs to pop out and have some character.

So, I started over again, sketching a 'caricature' of the actor:

I am having a really tough time getting it to look like the actor still, but also have cartoony features. I will just keep plugging away until I get there, but I am hoping that some of the talented people here can help me with some tips to get this goofy character looking awesome. Thanks!

Having found some better reference pics online, I have started over again.. My main issue now is if I should sketch some new reference plane images with the exaggerated features included? Or just model him how he looks then exaggerate after? For now, I am going for the second choice. Feel like I am failing hard, but also learning a lot... so, here goes!

Small update with new refs and my progress.. I am starting to hate this guy, but there's no way I'm not doing this.

Update of today's progress. I cheated a bit and took the ear from a stock model I found. (Pretty sure that's not cool, but this is a free job and I just want to get it done.) Gonna bring it in to ZBrush tomorrow and carve out some details. First time doing that too, so here's hoping for the best! The guy's name is Winston Chao apparently, found that out today. Apparently he is pretty famous here.

After some ZBrushing.. a lot to learn in this program. Hopefully I can figure out how to paint some skin and eyebrow details soon (tonight). The nose is driving me nuts too.

If anyone has any tips and resources on how to 'caricature-ize' a character that would be great. I am realizing now that I took on too much for a simple favour, but I am learning a ton at least, and the studio I am working in is full of super hot actresses every day, so that's not too bad. haha

Also, here's a pic of the dude.. His english name is Winston Chao. He looks older now though, so I have to take that into account.
