Sketchbook of Zeno Pelgrims

Hi there!

Please allow me to introduce myself. I'm Zeno Pelgrims, an 18 year old with a passion for 3D art. I have been thinking to make a blog lately (mainly for myself, so I could look back and see my progression) but then I realised making a blog-like thread over here would get my work a bit more exposure.

Follow me on twitter, I'm kinda active on the platform haha: @zenopelgrims

I got inspired to make an elder man when I was in London earlier this month with my grandfather.

Enough bla bla for now, let's post some pictures of my work in progress.

Main forms and shapes:

Skin details (pores added after the screencap):

Texturing:

Jumping into Maya: This still needs A LOT of work. Actually it's my first time bringing a sculpt over to maya without it being a test, so I'm still making many mistakes on the skin shader and the hair. Feedback would be appreciated!

To-do list

I've taken a close look at my image, and wrote down all kinds of improvements.

Final image - Jaak

After some struggling with the displacement map (you can see some banding) i've decided to move on to another project. I've learned so much in the 4/5 days I worked on him. Just incredible.

I also gave him a name, Jaak. He lives under a bridge in Antwerp and lost his body. You shouldn't be too sad about him - he's a happy man.

Final Image:

Even though my image is final and I won't adjust my mistakes, I'd like to get some feedback on this piece so I can implement the improvements on my next projects.

Old guy looks really good to me. The proportions look a little off, even caricatured but I think that kinda works for this piece.

The skin is nice, the eyes need work, so do the hair and the teeth reflections are weird - I'd try a SSS material. But all in all, if this was a learning project, I'd call it a good job!

Btw: what software did you do this on?

Thanks man. I really tried to make him look old, so i over-exaggerated the forms and shapes a bit.

You're right.. I should have used an sss material for the teeth. It was also the first time in did hair. Thanks for the feedback!

No problem, oh, just how did you get around doing the hair? I'm thinking about getting around to doing a portrait myself, and I have no idea about how to do the hair.

The hair is pretty straightforward (at least in Maya - dunno about other software), because it's so basic. You should be able to find plenty of tutorials online

I think this is really good work, especially considering it is a learner project. Your next work will undoubtedly even better.

Thanks man! I feel like I haven't reached my limits yet, and posts like these definitely push myself to explore them.

New project: Sad chef

Next project will be about a sad chef (I still have to give him a name). He pretends to be a real chef who cooks delicious food, but in fact he works in McDonalds, just making happy meals. This will be a very cartoony project, although a certain form of realism has to remain (really want to experiment with the Pixar look.)

So far i have only modelled the head. Didn't really mind to model the body because he will be wearing a chef's dress anyway.

More updates incoming tomorrow!

Dress

Didn't had much time today, only modelled the chefs shirt (no idea what the proper english word is - it's not my first language).

Some pics to show the topology:
