Studio Environment

Hello, I am currently trying to make a realistic environment in 3D,s Max. It is supposed to be a basement studio. This is my first project in the program and so I am still trying to learn the best techniques to get realistic results.

Right now I am using two lights that are supposed to be single light bulbs and I am thinking of having an additional light source come through the windows on the far end of the room. Also I am using mental ray as my renderer and I am still in the process of adding textures.

I am hoping to get some honest critique so I can continue to improve it. Thanks!

Are you using any reference for your lighting?

I don't have a specific reference. I googled recessed lighting and looked at the images. I am not sure which photo can be called a good reference.

If you are trying to replicate a photo realistic look, the best way is to actually try and recreate a photo that you like. While the actual elements in the scene can be different, they should have roughly the same size and shape (ie, a couch is a couch, a computer is a computer), and textures.

That way, you can see how the light and shadow falls in those areas, and how it reacts to those surfaces in that environment.

Thanks for the advice. I had to figure out how to measure each object. Thankfully 3Ds Max has a cool measuring feature. looks like I am about 1-2' off on my measurements. So I am trying to find an easy way to scale the objects to the appropriate size. Not to sure on how to do that with an editable poly.
