Post 3D Interior Lighting Assignment

Hi there,

This is my first WIP thread, which is an interior lighting scene. I have used Maya 2013 for modelling, texturing, and lighting; for rendering I used Mental Ray. I have been working with Maya for just over three months in a school program and I'm looking for any type of feedback that you would like to take the time to give.

I have provided the source image, which I found on Deviant Art designed by addoy55.

My objective was to reproduce the source image lighting as best I could. I didn't have to worry about reproducing the reflections exactly, nor the images in the picture frames and the television. So, I added my own renders of past school projects to fill the emptiness of those assets.

Here is the image with all the modelling completed:

This took about a week to complete.

I UV'd most of the assets in the scene; here is the image with all the textures applied:

During the texturing phase I was also applying lights. I started with five point lights on the ceiling to get a good base. I added direction lights to feed in more of an ambience to the scene. It wasn't providing enough light so I added a portal light to beef it up. Then, I added area lights to the different assets that were producing light (mirror, sink, ceiling fixture, t.v. stand, and the wall above the flowers/candles). Here is that image here:

I rendered out two passes: Ambient Occlusion and the Beauty. Made some tweaks in photoshop and the final render is shown below:

This is the first time I really dabbled with lighting a scene. I didn't really have any experience before this. I'm noticing flaws already with how dark it is. I'm going to try to photoshop it some more. Again, any comments on how I could do better would be greatly appreciated and thank you very, very much for taking the time to respond back.

I re-rendered my AO and here is the new image:

Hey man,

Are you saving things out in 16bit? Did you setup everything for a linear workflow? Your colors look a little clamped.

Your AO looks a little intense. You should be able to get adequate ambient shadowing with just FG if you set it up right. The AO works well for really small details. I would try lowering the max distance on your AO to the equivalent of a few inches in your scene.

Are those some of your 3D projects in the picture frames?

For a minute I thought the first image was your render, in which case I would have said very well done.

A bit dark. If you add the glare of the lamp and remove the blue color in the TV (all is red here) you should get it right because you have the modeling and shading part of it

Sorry, I have been busy for a while so I couldn't comment back.

Scote: Thank-you for the feedback, I have been making adjustments and it is turning out better.

AJ1: Thank-you also, for yours. The renders are 8bit. When I first rendered out the AO I left the max distance at what it was measured out to 71.8; it was very grey and dark so I found I had to lower the max distance to 8 to get it white and bright. I will make it lower and see what happens. Yes they are a few of my projects I've done in school and my own time. Lots of fun!!
