Khazad-dum

Hi all,

I'm reading The Fellowship of the Ring right now and I like the illustration of Khazad-dum from Alan Lee. So I decided to make my own version. I'm stick to the illustration but instead of light comming from the skylight I lighten up Gandalf's staff. I think its more natural.

C&C are welcome.

This is only WIP not final.

It's a WIP threat man, we assume you post something not finish already

Nice scene. Because the main focus is the lighting I think you have to really give some nice relief to everything for getting nice highlights and shadows.

But Your focus point (the fellowship) maybe just too low in the frame.

In the original, the ray of light is the main focus..

I like this, but some other colour might be nice in there. The nice thing about the Alan Lee one is the use of subtle complementary colours in the earthy reds and greens. You had more of that in your original with the purples and yellows.
Also your latest image is very crisp. I liked the heavy air feel of your first image. It looked dank and dusty.

Yes, I agree that the dusty/foggy quality of your first image is better, the second is too clean for the environment. Also, one interesting thing to note about the original illustration is the light and dark of the fore, mid, and background. The foreground is almost the darkest, the midground is well lit, and the background fades to dark again. It adds a nice depth to the image.

im testing various atmospheres and i decided that warmer is better, the rim light is maybe too strong, it need more tuning

jtraylor i cant do it this way because i have totally different lighting :( and i dont wanna have that big light beam

thanks for c&c
