Environment: High poly to low poly

I am currently working on a sci-fi interior scene, but i have run into a wall with the proper workflow of high poly to low poly modeling. I currently have a high poly mesh completed. From there should I create UV's before I build a low poly mesh to transfer the normal maps to? Or do I model both the high poly, and low poly first, and then create a normal map for detail to be transferred to the low poly model?

I am using maya 2013. The low poly will be imported into UDK. I also have access to Zbrush, and Bitmap2material for maps.

Hello amew,

from my experience, the best way is to first build a low poly model, so you can divide the mesh and then paint on it and do some normal mapping. From this point you can use those maps and uvs from the low poly for either the low and high poly model. Its always a bit tricky to scale down the polycount then raise up the smoothness.

Maybe you have got a low poly version of it and start over from this point.
