Alien2, Sean Kennedy (3D)

Title: Alien2
Name: Sean Kennedy
Country: USA
Software: Blender, Photoshop

A character I created to practice every aspect of creature creation - sculpting, retopology, texture painting, lighting, rendering, post production, etc. All done completely in Blender, using Photoshop for texture maps and the matte painted background.

Here's a clean render of the sculpt, without the environment.

I'm going to post a few WIP pics.

I sculpted it using Blender's built-in sculpting tools, which are great, and getting better all the time.

After the high-res sculpting was completed, I sketched on it in the viewport to plan out the retopology. I didn't stick to my sketch perfectly, but it gave me a great idea of where the problem areas were going to be. I only ended up with two triangles in the mesh.

UV unwrapping, and then I could finally texture paint on the model in realtime, which was fun! I also worked on the textures in Photoshop.

Then I laid out the composition and did the lighting and rendering. I used Cycles, Blender's new-ish renderer. I made a quick matte painting for behind him, something like the inside of a spaceship, but it's rough, because I knew it would be out of focus.

I also did some post-production retouching in Photoshop once the render was done.
