I can tell you that Autodesk has invested a significant amount of time and money in supporting the development of this software and is interested in continuing to grow this relationship, but I can't comment on features that may or may not be available in future versions of our software.

We'd welcome you to voice your support for this as a feature at:

Hi David,
I've asked Autodesk to respond to this. You can expect a reply here shortly.

Thank you you for the quick reply. Looking forward to the answer!

I finally got everything installed and loaded up the HIVBloodSerum - COOL!! I'm not familiar with any of this stuff and can't seem to understand the context of what I'm looking at. What I do visually should be based on what's represented here. Is there a dummy's guide to what I'm looking at?

Edit: Specifically, the serum.

Hi Christopher,
Glad you're up and running. I've started roughing together a descriptive page about the model and I'm planning to make a 1-2 minute movie to overview the HIV 1.4 model today or tomorrow. Sorry this is rough, but this will give you an inkling of what you're seeing and the videos and a shorter more pertinent text description I post in the next few days will tell you what each piece is, why some are important or interesting, and some general pointers on HIV:

More soon!

But the Sci-Viz plugin will cease to function on May 1, 2013 (http://labs.autodesk.com/utilities/sciviz).
Is there anyway after May 1st to keep working with Autopack/Cellpack in 3ds Max? I'm asking this since I'm not very eager to dive into new software which can only be used for 4-5 months...although it is very tempting to jump in, looking at the results so far ;-)

Best regards,
David

Hi David,
Christopher from Autodesk said that he replied right away yesterday, but neither of us can see his reply. He asked me to paste this in the mean time:

Quote: The Sci-Viz project is a free technology preview. Autodesk can't comment on features that may or may not be available in future versions of our software.
I can however say that we have invested a significant amount of time money in supporting the development of this software and that we are interested in continuing to grow the relationship with the makers of uPy, ePMV, and cellPack.

HIV model background and details

Hoping to add a lot more to the http://www.autopack.org/cellpackchallenge2012 information page as the day goes on (and to continue cleaning it up), but the most important new link to help understand the model and all of the HIV components is the section I added last night:

This interactive version of David Goodsell's watercolor painting of an HIV particle provides an overview of HIV along with an overview of each of the major components of the structure such as the "Spike" proteins shown in this screengrab (The site requires Flash):

http://www.rcsb.org/pdb/static.do?p...-animation.html

I'll try to do something similar for the Blood Serum along with the video walthroughs of the model I'm making.

Hi Aaron,
I need more details to help you. This is an error I've not seen for some time. Can you please confirm the following and answer these questions:
1) What version of Maya are you using, and on what operating system?
2) What version of the uPy Plugin Suite (that contains ePMV and autoPACK) did you install?
3) Did you update both ePMV and autoPACK right after installing? (if you go to the GUI for each plugin, and look under help>about, what version numbers does it report for uPy, autoPACK, and ePMV?)
4) Are you on a stable internet connection?
We'll get you up and running,
G

Hi

Thank you for making these plugins available. I have a small wish to request. I understand that my setup is within the minority btw. These apps wont work behind tight network controlled environments that rely on http proxies/ifrewall for internet connection since it seems like most download requests are just plain http requests. My desktops do not have internet connection and I can only connect to outside world if the apps support a proxy.

I can see that supporting a proxy might be a bit too much, but maybe you can provide downloadable versions of the HIV models.

thanks

The whole point of the challenge is to use the autoPack builder, Supplying a model would be breaking the rules.

Hi,
Although we may be able to do this with Collada soon (it supports instancing), just exporting the models will not work well in a universal format because of the amount of geometry involved.
EDIT: Perhaps you could ask here if one of the participants to post the model in whatever format you need, as the native formats (.c4d, .maya, .max) are much more efficient than generic formats, but we don't have much time, energy, or space to post versions of all of the models ourselves.
EDIT: Actually, I agree with Shawn- we'll try to fix your problem when we get time, but I don't want people to post complete models, indeed one main goal of this contest is to iron out issues like this with the GUI that we can't find if users don't post them because they are just downloading prebuilt models.- thanks Shawn.
I'll ask about providing a portal option in the GUI with all of the information it would need to set such a thing up- but as you say, don't hold your breath waiting for that.

I strongly recommend against the following because it is labor intensive and you won't be able to automatically get all of the advantages autoPACK offers, but it should get you up and running if you can either temporarily disconnect from your internet or if autoPACK doesn't throw an error when http fails due to the firewall.

However, since it looks like you know what you're doing, this will keep you within the rules:

You could download the components you need and install them.
If autoPACK can't access the web, it will look in your local cache for the files it needs.
The current "databank" for all the files it needs are at: http://code.google.com/p/autofill/s...rowse/data/HIV/

You need to put the contents of all of the folders into their corresponding local folders, then restart your host. Your local folders are in the MGLToolsPckgs/AutoFill folder whose location varies from host to host. I'll type Server folder on the left and local on the right with an example file below each. You need all the files that have the tags matched to your host:
Host Tag
c4d .dae and .c4d
maya .ma and .fbx
3ds .FBX
Blend .blend and .dae

Server // Local
/geoms /cache_ingredients Surf_Nef.tag
/results /cache_results HIVresult_1_4.apr
/recipe /autoFillRecipeScripts HIVBloodSerum_recipe_setup_1_2.py
                                                    and HIVBloodSerum1.2.xml
/spheres /cache_ingredients/sphereTree 1hys_RT.sph
../data / recipe_available.xml

PLEASE write back to let me know if this works or if you had to do anything special.
Good luck!

Thanks for the extensive and helpful post. I realize that most people have direct connection but I do not and I am sure some people keep their workstations off from exposing to outside world as well. So any additional options regarding network setup in the plugins will be hlepful.

Ok Here is a screenshot, let me know if I did it right.

I basically used svn on my firewall server and downloaded contents and trasnfered to my workstation and put the files as you have described.

The HIV 1.4 did not construct but 1.3 did
