CGChallenge XXVII - TEN - (image) - joolz

Oh, now I see- I'm supposed to start a thread here... okay.

Honestly, I have no idea if I can finish this. BUT I'm enjoying myself too much to quit, so here's what I've got so far.

Thanks! Ah, the backstory... I don't really know just yet! Initially I just wanted to show a strong heroine on horseback. I thought I'd put something menacing in the foreground, below her- my first thought was mutant spiders. The 'horse' would have ten (or maybe nine) kill tags on its flank (see sketch)... Then I thought giant cockroaches... then some ancient nuclear waste containment pod... I still don't know. But I'm certainly open to advice!

So I'm trying to decide where my color palette is going- here are some ideas. As for story, looks like we're going with spiders.

Coming along now. I'm happy with the composition, color, light. I'll probably add some mist, texture, glows... Not sure how I feel about the bottom of the scene- do I blur it some? Add more detail? I don't want it pulling too much attention away from the heroine.

I don't think I like the light&colors. The lights seem randomly colorful - there's little logic to them. The blue sky clashes with the red key light - I don't think it would look this way in 'reality'. Then there's yellow light, but it seems to affect just the rider, not even the ground - what's the source of that light? The way you used lights - they just change color of the surface, not really making it brighter, lacking the gradation (from the almost white 'hotspot' to gradual fade into shadow). You have just flat red/yellow/green shape... IMHO not ideal

I assume the green light is because of the glowing green monster in the foreground - that makes sense, but the monster needs more detail/definition, since he's so close to camera. Or, he needs less light, so he's dark and only his shape is visible.

I allowed myself a little paint-over - mostly used Photoshop's Black and White Adjustment layer to get rid of the colors, and to boost lighting at the same time, then I separated the fore/mid/background and worked on making them read clearly. The colors are lost, but now the space reads better, making for a stronger composition. I'll share the psd if you want.
Now If I was to add colors, I'd do it subtly at first - first some sun keylight, then some low intensity GI/skylight fill, trying to match relative intensities to the ones I have on the sketch. Then maybe some additional colorful rimlights.

Azazel- THANK YOU SO MUCH. You're really forcing me to think this out more. I agree with what you're saying, and the paint-up is very helpful. Actually, it's more how I originally inteded the piece to look, I just got a little lost along the way.

Okay... well, here's the latest. Just 23 days left- if I could get any more feedback that'd be great! I took a lot of Azazel's advice, but I couldn't entirely give up the loud colors. Anyway, I think it's getting closer.

its getting there for sure..

i would maybe decide on what the focus of the image is.. for me the foreground is too prominent and the focal point unclear..

Maybe shift the camera angle or view point slightly so the rider is larger and lower in the image.

keep going.

Much better now - it's just that flat read light. IMO it would add a lot to the image, if it had bright 'hotspots' and some gradation. Take a look here:

The lit parts goes from white to gray - not flat white (flat red in your case).

Wow, more good advice.
Bearfoot- this has been a sort of struggle from day one. I darkened the bottom a little more, but I don't want to lose too much there. I tried blurring it more, but didn't care for the result. Too late to change the camera. I guess I like the back-and-forth of the viewer's focus; it generates motion and eventually I think the eye ends up on the rider where all the detail lives.

Azazel- I added a little more highlight in some places. Here's the thing- the light is casting a red glow, so it seems weird to me to take it much brighter. It'll start looking like a white light hitting a red surface, not a red light hitting a grey surface... Anyway, I hope it looks a little less flat now, though I admit I didn't do much.

I added a few little details- mostly on the beast and the rifle... but I think I need to call this final. With only a week left I've now got relatives in town- getting away to tweak this more is unlikely.
