If we couldn't clean some of that up, it'd be kind of a pain to work with. That mesh is my favorite but doesn't seem like it was created so much with animation in mind. As long as we're not changing the shape of the base mesh I don't see why it matters.
Preventing people from completely changing the mesh design seems to be why that rule exists... not to prevent you from creating a solid rig with good deformations.
