Hi everyone,

Been chipping away at this for a while, starting to collect dust, any help with environment/background ideas? Also would love feedback on pose/perspective.

I think the background is alright, I'd look into framing your illustration a bit differently, maybe focus on the face more, which is coming along really nicely.

What do you want to convey with this image? Is it just a creature portrait and there's no narrative aspect at all, or do you want to tell a visual story and evoke emotions in your viewers? If so, what kind of emotion do you want to evoke?

Right now, your image is just an xenomorph alien in what looks like mid-stride, and the composition is really cramped, with the top border pressing down on its head, and the left border too close to its face. Since there's no visual narrative right now, the possibilities are endless, so think about what the visual story you want to tell is first, and then we can go from there.

When you start a piece of artwork, you need to think about what you want to convey with it right in the beginning, instead of doing a character without any purpose, and then later arbitrarily slap some background behind it and hope that everything will feel cohesive. Come up with a visual narrative right from the beginning and plan how you want to execute the visual storytelling. Try to think like a movie director, planning a scene with actors, props, backdrop, lighting, camera placement, etc, and all of that is used to tell a visual narrative that is meant to elicit some kind of emotional response from the audience.

Do thumbnail sketches showing the composition of the entire scene in your visual narrative, and you should also do light/value studies, and color studies to determine the overall atmosphere/look of your scene. When you have all those big and important aspect of your imagery worked out in thumbnail sketch phase, you can then go into the piece feeling totally prepared and confident that you know exactly what you're after.
