WIP looking for feedback on shading

I've started practicing with shading in photoshop. It was recommended to me that i start with grayscale then move on to color. I've finished his shirt and right arm so far, and I'd appreciate any pointers, let me know if i'm moving in the right direction. thx!

What are you trying to do with this image? What is it for? Who is this character, and what is happening? Is there a narrative, and if so, what is the narrative?

Are you using proper references? If not, you should consider shooting some references, because it'll help you immensely, as you don't have the experience required to be doing stuff solely out of your head.

Why is your value steps so skewed? There's a huge jump between the two darkest values instead of a gradual shift like in the other value steps.
