Don't use a lot of stringy, thin brushstrokes unless you know why you're doing it. Thick and thin brushstrokes create different types of surfaces, and usually you want to use large brushstrokes for the general forms, and then progressively smaller brushstrokes to depict more and more detail. You also want to be careful about having really sharp brushstrokes laid on top of very blurry ones if they are the same plane/surface--it'll look very awkward if they aren't depicting two totally different levels of macro and micro detail.
