Still life painting in black and white

I grabbed a few things from my kitchen and painted the following scene. I tried to get cylindrical shapes as I struggle with them rather alot and some of the forms look flat :(

What looks weak in this scene?

Because you are painting man-made objects of precise shapes, you need to be refine the shapes more so they don't look slightly misshapen or have irregularities in their surfaces/shapes.

Your rendering of values is quite good, and as a technical rendering exercise, this is fine. But if you want this image to also be a piece of artwork that stands on its own, and more than just a rendering exercise, then the composition needs some work. Right now the arrangement doesn't have a sense of visual design to it--it's just kind of arbitrary looking.

Thank you very much for the comment.

I decided to paint the still life primarily as a rendering exercise and I'd agree that it is okay within that area but lacking in any other areas such as composition. I intend to do a few more still lifes, and you're right, I shouldn't overlook composition as it is something that should be considered in any image I make, even the practise ones.

When it comes to ellipses... I suck. The edges of the bowls look rather wobbly. Hopefully my edge control will improve with practise.
