Is Graphic Design a good start to achieve my dreams?

I am 17 years old right now, and I want to be a VFX artist, game designer or anything that contains games & movies. But the only thing that gets on my way is that I can’t afford money to study and sign on a program in Think Tank the place I want to learn 3D stuff at.

My last choice I have left is to get on a 4 years program “Graphic & Visual Design”; I like drawing specially comics & writing stories.

At the end I think that I am too late to be what I want also I’m so confused at this moment, I really need an advice to achieve my dreams.

Hey I'm exactly like you, I'm 16 and in highschool. I think majoring in graphic design is a good start. I suggest double majoring in something else for job security. But thats just me I have no experience with anything. haha

Hi

You are at the perfect time to start your dreams and I was like you a year ago (ive made my mind up now)...confused at what to do because there are lots of jobs the games and movie industries that you can do. There is still plenty of time to get into those industries and you choose to go on the Graphic & Visual Design course you could go on to design box art, concept drawings, layout for DVD/Games menus etc. Plus the skills you learn in that course are transferable in 3D/VFX Art as well.

I hope this is good advice for you

well firstly ur guys age is not late .. it just right as andy mention it just d right age to start your dream but saod i can say ur lil confuse at d moment... ok here is something which might solve it a bit (i hop it does) o ksaod gaming and getting into movies u might need different specialization. but it actually depends on wat u want .gmaing industry have modelers ,lighting ,textuirng artist and coders .even modelrs texturing and lighting artist are in movie industry thought but as u said u want to be vfx artist ..for it u should know 3d as well... n as u mention u both r prusing soem graphic design course so i m taking that colour sence is good . and to b be a vfx artist u have to be good compositor and should have good colour sence, colour mention and by d way u guys make matte painting ? if u wanna b vfx artist that will b reall y good .. so i hope i solved a lil confusion going inside u so now the best thing is choose d way u wanna proceed too.and make all ur dreams come true

I started out doing graphic design in middle/high school, was definitely a great gateway into the CG field.

Graphic design isn't necessarily a bad thing to study - it's what I am qualified as myself - but it's also not necessarily the most beneficial thing to study either, if you're aiming for VFX or games. Depending on what you'd ideally like to specialise in, studying something like fine arts (for modelling, or texturing), photography (for lighting) or even computer science (for technical positions) would be better. Otherwise if you're interested in being an animator, I would definitely recommend studying animation.

thanks guys, you have really encouraged me at the moment.
I am not sure about what I want to be in the CG industry but I am inspired about modeling & texturing in both games and movies industry, specially characters.
note: about movies I want to be able to use my skills in 3d after studying to work on movies like "The Matrix, 300, AVATAR, THE LORD OF THE RINGS... and so"

The best classroom and teacher for art is the earth herself. Don't stress needing to move anywhere or get in anywhere to learn art, or improve yourself. All you need is a nice place to sit outside, a sketchpad, a quiet mind and the ability to pay really close attention.
