Geometry (Mesh?) lines not displaying in orthographic view

Hi guys, full disclosure I'm a total noob at Maya. Pretty much just started this afternoon.
I wasn't sure where to go with this problem so I posted on the Autodesk forum and now here...

Anyway, I've been following the basic tutorials from World of Level Design and have been really enjoying it, my only issue is that in my FRONT orthographic view, the geometry lines (i think that's what they're called) are not displaying properly.
I've tried messing around with changing the camera to default view and reloading the project but nothing seems to help.
It only happens in this one view as well, the others are fine.
One thing did seem to 'fix' it, and that was changing the VIEW ALONG AXIS to z as it is currently at -z. I don't know if this is important, but all of the views are -y, -z, and -x
If I change the view to just z, I can see the lines clearly.

I also notice that the mesh can be seen if I turn the grid off....but I kinda want to keep it on!

Any suggestions what it may be?

Thanks in advance and apologies f this has been answered. I had a quick look but wasn't sure what I was looking for to be honest.
