3d animation sectors

so Ive just started trying to research schools.. Animation Mentor was almost looking like something I might like to try.. but then I came across a forum post here and realized all it is is character animation? I guess I hadnt even thought about a specific sector of 3d art that I would want to learn.. I just wanted to eventually be able to know it all enough to make my own art in my free time..

is there a site or forum thread that explains the different sectors you can specialize in? how do you decide which one you are best for? or are there programs where you learn it all?

Well you would specialise in what area to do when you gain experience (what I have heard). By different Sectors, do you mean game animation, Visual Effects, 3D Modelling 2D and 3D animations? As for deciding which one you are best for, i imagine that also comes from experience.

what I mean by animation sectors.. are different areas you can specialize in like lighting, environment, characters, animation.. etc. I'm thinking about signing up with Animschool, because they have a modeling/rigging program as opposed to just animation... Id rather be designing the look of a character than have to learn how to become an actor through a 3d character. I guess the overly expressive cartoony characters that are typical in most 3d films kind of turned me off to that...

If I did sign up to that modeling/rigging program Id like to eventually learn more about creating a whole scene.. Im not sure where one would take after graduating from that program.. but Im assuming that I would gain enough connections through the school to figure out where to go next.

Im just trying to get a clearer idea of how to set goals in trying to make this a career, and what to expect.

It seems like my choices are getting narrowed down though, because Im liking the idea of Animschool.. seems simple and not as expensive as the other schools.
