1986 - One Good Cop

50 min in Painter X

A pig cop from Duke Nukem. Trying out the Pastel brushes today and most of them weren't working very well for me. I ended up doing most of this with the Artist Pastel Chalk and the Round X-Soft Pastel 30.

1987 - Taxi

50 min in Painter X

This is based on the Taxi pinball table. Gorby wants a ride, but our driver is distracted by the woman in the red dress.

This is another learning experience where the drawing didn't really go right. I decided to try out the Digital Watercolor brushes by using only those brushes for this picture. I can't really recommend this approach because you are stuck with what you put on the page with no way to fix it. Trying to repaint problem areas only makes the colors darker or more intense and the mistakes stand out more. I kind of like Digital Watercolor and will probably use it again, but next time I will let myself use it with some other more opaque brushes that will let me repaint anything that isn't right.

65 min in Painter X

Decided to go with a Swiss Army Wrench here. Colored Pencils on Pebble Board. This was my first time using these brushes and I was just beginning to figure out how to make them work at the end of the drawing. The light blue background may have been a poor choice because so much of it ended up showing through the other colors or blending into them. Something more neutral or darker probably would have been better. The course texture is really killing me here. It reminds me of doing chalk drawings on really rough pavement. Next time I use these brushes, it will be on different paper with a finer texture.

2126 - The Armor

40 min in Painter

Mostly trying to play with the Watercolor and Digital Watercolor brushes here and having problems because they can lag pretty badly if I make them as large as I wanted to. Finished up with a Gouache brush.

2212 - Wannabees

20 Min in Manga Studio

Just a quick sketch of bees here. I was trying the classic pen stylus and I find that I like it a lot better than the grip pen. It is more accurate and feels more like a real pencil.

2213 - Creature of the depths

50 min in Painter X

Trying to a digital pencil sketch of the Creature from the Black Lagoon using the Colored Pencil brushes. This was a little wierd for me because I am used to shading with a pencil, and these brushes stayed the same shade of gray no matter how hard I pressed. I am going to try some of the regular pencil brushes to see if they work more like pencils.

2223 - Alien Landscapes

About an hour in Painter X

I tried to imagine an alien from the movies taking over a tree instead of humans. I don't think this one is very successful, it was mostly a struggle with some unfamiliar tools. I was also trying to work by starting with mostly monochromatic color. I don't think that works for me. I will be going back to doing a grayscale image and then coloring it.

About 40 min in Painter X

2228 - California Dreams

55 min in Painter X

Another hour and 15 minutes for color

Color is mostly Watercolor and Digital Airbrush painted on top of an image that is a blend of the grayscale and a copy of the grayscale with sepia browns gradient applied. I spent a lot of coloring time cleaning up my sloppy oversprays and trying to figure out how to make the watercolor brushes do what I wanted them to do.

2413 Liberation Day

About 50 min in Painter X

I haven't done any digital drawing for a long time and it really felt like it was fighting me. Mostly the chalk brushes and digital airbrush used here.
