Particle animation, emission based on audio


first of all, i hope im in the right forum.

Im quite new to particles but already found out a lot by myself, but now i got stucked.
What im trying to do is something like this (the first ~30 seconds):

What i have got so far is the animation of the particle flow in 3ds max.
I have saved the particles in Krakatoa with age, life-spawn, velocity, emission, color, acceleration, id, and some custom channels.
Then i started a new sceene with a PRT-Loader, loaded my particles and add a maga-modifyer, but now i got stucked. I read and watshed many tutorials and what i have got so far is to change the color or emission of all particles depending on age, or a custom value controlled by an audio-controler. What i want is an effect like in the video, where only a part of the particles are illuminated.
I think i have to set the emission depending on the life-spawn and age to keep only specific particles illuminated depending on an audio controller, but i dont have ani idea how to do,
so any help or tips are apprecciated.
