Duplication that reduces objects for each duplication?

So I'm currently doing a pyramid in Maya, and have stumbled accross some problems in making it realistic. I want to do all the pyramid rocks as real objects, therefore I can use the duplicate special and make them as instances. But the thing is that I don't want to duplicate all the "rocks" as in this image.

So, is there a script or something that reduces two objects for each duplication? So that all the instances together form one side of a pyramid? If that makes sense?

If you knew scripting at all it'd be pretty easy to write one, but if you don't, I'd just group select all the objects you don't need and delete them.

I don't understand, what you are looking for. What do you mean reduces two objects?

I know, it was a bit tricky to understand, but I've realized that what I was asking for wouldn't work anyway.

Thanks though!
