Modelling question

I'm currently working on a personal piece, producing the model of an aeroplane. I have my wings modelled perfectly and now need to cut a hole in the underside for the wheels. I am really struggling with this. Does anyone have any advice on how I could do this? There are more edges on my wheel support than on the wing at this point so can't simply extrude out and connect the edges, if I do I lose the nice smooth fluid shape of the wings. More edges flattens out the parts of the wing where I have added more loops. Does anyone have any tips?

I am using 3D Studio Max 2013

Well, you have a few options depending on how realistic you're looking to make this.

The easiest option would be to simply create a floating mesh (A cluster of geometry that's not physically attached to the rest of the model) in the shape of the wheel well, and texture the interior black to give the illusion of depth. Floating meshes are usually the easiest solution for this sort of thing.

If floating meshes aren't feasible - either due to a game engine not working with intersecting geometry, or breaking the realism of the mesh - then Modo has a function called a Boolean. I don't know what its equivalent would be in your program, maybe someone else can pitch the proper term? But basically you create the shape of the hole you want to cut into the wing as a second object, let it intersect the wing, and the computer carves out a hole where the two meshes intersect.
That's your brute force option, and since the geometry isn't likely to line up, you'll have to spend some time cleaning up the hole and making sure it renders smoothly.
