Modelling with a cylinder

Hello. I'm trying to learn 3d modelling and the technique I am trying to learn is "edge loop" modelling.

This is the head of something like my 4th or 5th do-over on a horse model:

I've started out with a cylinder, deleted the faces at each end, and then shaped it into a horse head (mostly in the side view, a bit in perspective view). I don't get what I'm supposed to with the hole that still exists. How do I get it to be round snout like a real horse (i.e. http://preview.turbosquid.com/Previ...1e02-4fae-a160-

I'm new but of the two models I've been working on (human and horse) I keep running into this problem eventually. How do I close the hole making it round? I want to just like drag a line from the top of the nose to the bottom of the nose and start connecting the points but I don't know how to do that.

Select your edges, hit spacebar, and open up your edit mesh menu. Click Extrude, and move your edge to the center. Now hit Merge Vertex Tool, and drag your points together to close the gap.

What edges do you mean? I figured you meant the edges of the hole. I don't seem to be getting good results from this. For one thing, hitting spacebar on my Maya just gives me the four viewports. Second, I'm not sure what you mean when you say "move your edge to the center". When I extrude with the edges selected new polygons are created in the direction I am moving but they do not move closer together.

One more thing: This is a one sided mesh with an instance from Duplicate Special. I don't know if this is related to why what you said didn't work for me.

Are you using Max or Maya?

If Max:

In Border mode, click an edge and it will select the loop of edges. Then scroll to "Edit borders" and click on "Cap" to close the hole. Then in "Edit Geometry" click on "Inset" and inset it a couple of times. Finally use the "Tesselate" to tie up the vertices crowded near the centre.

Forget I posted that above. I just had a look at your screengrab and it looks like you are using Maya.
