Sculpting details from photographs on Head

Hi, I've created a blogpost with a movie/p3d/screenshot of a recent headsculpt: Head sculpt - Fine detail (screenshot at the bottom)

I'm experimenting with detailing a head sculpt in Zbrush 4R4. Right now I'm using Highpassed photo's and Spotlight. I constantly reverse a color/intensity mask to sculpt the details, but I notice flat area's between opposite selections. Has anyone experienced the same problem and found an answer?

Thanks!

Mark
