modeling ropes, lianes

I'm looking for most control way of creating lianes, ropes that are running around objects, tight knots around them and holding them together. Playing with splines and moving vertices beziers etc is killing me. I also didn't noticed new zbrush features that might help with that. Yes sticky tubes are ok but it's hard to tight a knot with it. Maybe you guys know some plugins or scripts for 3dsmax to do it easily.

apart from using the features of the new curve mode in Zbrush, have you considered Zspheres.
Really easy to use and great for the kind of rope knot-tie that you require.

I'm not sure of any plugins for Max, but you could use the draw-spline-on-surface features in the freeform graphite modeling toolset. Granted, there will be some spline-vert refining and manual tweaking but if you are more comfortable in max than ZB.
