I have the feeling that Maya is not using my graphic card

Hello all together,

I have a mac pro 3.1 (2.8ghz 2 Quad-core Intel Xeon)
14 GB Ram, SSD, GFX 570. Mountain Lion. Maya.

I just need a better way to understand how maya is using my setup.
I have only basic understanding of computer hardware. I'll try to be as precise as possible in my question.

When I render I can see that all my cpu cores are working 100% with a monitoring software.
But my GPU works only around 2-4 % while rendering.

What I want to know is, if the gpu should support rendering more, or is it just used for immediate real-time rendering?

Thanks a lot for help on clearing this up a little for me,

please don't want you to waste too much of your time on this by giving me an extensive explanation, because I should familiarize myself more how hardware works.(shame on me)

I just want to know if it is normal, or if I'm using the wrong graphic card for maya.
I know that it is a good card but maybe not for 3d Rendering. If anyone could give me his opinion on the card this would be great too.

Thank you for taking your time to read this.

The primary purpose of the graphics card is to render output for the monitor. The main load for that is the viewport in Maya. Generally speaking the graphics card doesn't do rendering for the final output images unless you're using a specialized renderer designed to utilize the GPU (most renderers don't).
